My father introduced Rawlins to me. He loved the PI, and I wasn’t sure whether my adoration for the character was genuine or if it was primarily tied to my fondness for those early memories.
I dug ‘Devil in a Blue Dress’ out of the attic the other day, and from what I’ve seen so far, it holds up. The book is set during a difficult era for black people, yet it doesn’t obsess over the prejudices of the 1940s — though it doesn’t ignore those issues.
I make an effort to avoid stories about race relations. The subject is always in the news these days, so I prefer to keep it out of the fiction I read.
