Lawrence Block was one of the first authors I read actively as most of the Matt Scudder settings were in and around New York City. I spent several years working in the city, commuting from New Jersey. I may have stopped a time or two at taverns/bars which may have inspired Block writing ’bout Scudder’s haunts. Crisp style. Twists and turns are active, not predictable. Besides Scudder stories, Block developed a bookseller thief, Bernie Rhodenbarr. How great is that? Bookstore book stories are also near the top of my lists as are the several authors listed above, Grisham, Connelly, et al. Very good “stuff” and above.
