Wiggs is an author that writes some refreshing novels full of emotional honesty as she is one of the best at capturing emotional on every page of her works.
Summer at Willow Lake and its lead character are my favorite of anything Susan Wiggs has ever produced. She writes an engaging story with beautifully written descriptions and characters full of depth. there were parts of the novel that were somehow Thornbirdish but I still loved this novel a lot.
Overall, the Lakeshore Chronicles are great light reads as Susan writes interesting stories and characters. If I was a better driven cook maybe I could enjoy all the delicious seeming recipes at the back of the novels.
I wish I could live in one of Susan Wiggs’ books. Her protagonists are usually down on their luck. Things are tough. They are faced with personal and financial struggles that threaten to overwhelm them. But then a lucky break comes along: an unexpected inheritance, a benevolent relative they never knew existed, a potential love interest that completes them in ways they never imagined.
That doesn’t happen in real life. Real-life problems stay with you for months, if not years, without reprieve. But I suppose, that is why we read fiction. It allows us to escape the difficulties of real life. I don’t know if I would classify Wiggs as a romance author. My library keeps her books in the romance section, but I think she writes women’s fiction.
