Roz Warren

Roz Warren (Rosalind Warren) was born on November 4th, 1954 and is currently 71 years old. Warren attended the University of Chicago where she received a Bachelor of Science degree.

Roz Warren is a humorist, librarian, essayist, editor, anthologist, publisher, and writing coach whose work has appeared in Funny Times, The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Christian Science Monitor, The Jewish Forward, Reader’s Digest, and The Huffington Post. Known for her sharp wit and warm observational humor, she has built a long-running career celebrating everyday absurdities, human quirks, and the joys and frustrations of modern life.

Warren traces her writing life back to early childhood, when she first picked up a pencil and began crafting stories. Although she would later become known for her humor, she doesn’t describe herself as a class clown. Instead, she grew up as an introverted bookworm - someone who listened, watched, and absorbed the world around her. In her twenties, she began publishing short fiction in magazines ranging from Beatniks from Space to Seventeen, gradually refining the voice that would define her later work.

Before becoming a librarian, Warren worked as a bankruptcy attorney, a job she eventually walked away from when she realized she preferred happiness over a high-pressure, high-salary career. Her leap into librarianship not only gave her a more joyful day-to-day life but also placed her at the heart of a community brimming with stories. That shift in environment strongly influenced the tone and subject matter of her later humor writing.

As an editor and anthologist, Warren has assembled several lively collections that showcase wit from a diverse range of cartoonists and illustrators. Her anthology Men Are from Detroit, Women Are from Paris gathers cartoons by women lampooning men in all their romantic, domestic, and social misadventures. Contributors include Nicole Hollander, Roz Chast, Jan Eliot, Lynda Barry, Mary Lawton, Marian Henley, and Nina Paley.

She followed this with the 1999 collection When Cats Talk Back: Cat Cartoons With Attitude, featuring more than 100 cartoons about bold, demanding, mischievous felines who have no qualms about offering opinions - solicited or not.

Warren also edited Mothers!, a spirited anthology of cartoons exploring motherhood in all its chaos, tenderness, and comedy. Contributors include Jan Eliot, Lynda Barry, Nicole Hollander, Lynn Johnston, and many others.

Across her varied roles, Roz Warren continues to champion humor as not just entertainment, but insight - an everyday tool for making sense of the world.
