Bill Bryson has always fascinated me. For the most part, I would rather jump off a cliff than read non-fiction. Non-fiction seems pointless to me. I read to escape to fantastical landscapes where the impossible can happen. Non-fiction does the opposite. It grounds you in reality.

And yet, I have several copies of Bryson’s books in my home library. So clearly, I am a contradiction. I think Bryson captures my attention because his books take me on exciting journeys to places I have no intention of visiting.

For instance, ‘Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail’ paints such a vivid picture of the Appalachian Trail that I could see myself standing in those mountains, next to Bryson. But I wouldn’t be caught dead on the Appalachian Trail. I have an unhealthy attachment to indoor comforts.

Bill Bryson’s Made in America novel is fascinating and sometimes overwhelming read about how language has evolved in the United States for over hundreds of years.
He explores America’s history and the effects it had on the language. The author’s research skills are evident throughout the novel, and he constantly cites his sources.
Bryson gives me a unique and enjoyable reading experience. I like his sense of humor and how he turns the driest subject into something entertaining.
The Mother Tongue comprises essays about the origin and usage of English. His Travel Guide books are still relevant and helpful guides today, and the descriptions and writing style are humorous and casual.
