I urge every avid fan of the Dalziel and Pascoe series to revisit ‘A Clubbable Woman.’ When I re-read it a little while ago, I completely forgot that it was published in the 70s. It was incredibly dated.
Nonetheless, I enjoyed rediscovering the first installment in Dalziel and Pascoe’s adventures. It is a little jarring to see where Reginald started. His style is not quite what I’m accustomed to.
For instance, Reginald’s representation of women is surprising when you consider what he did with Elly later on. Also, Andy doesn’t have much depth at this point, and Pete has too many internal monologues. I don’t know if these count as weaknesses or merely opportunities for character development that Reginald eventually utilized.
Either way, ‘A Clubbable Woman’ was a fun re-read. I liked reminding myself of Dalziel and Pascoe’s roots.
