I don’t know if my young nephews would enjoy them, but I would gladly recommend the works of Ellis Peters to them, which is surprising because they are pre-teens, and Ellis Peters is an author from the 20th Century.
She isn’t the first name that comes to mind when people discuss pre-teen fiction. But I think my nephews would like her. First of all, her books are short. Initially, the length was a problem. But she packs more than enough story into each small volume to make the individual books worth reading.
Secondly, the author’s stories have plenty of sweet humor, the kind that doesn’t rely on curse words to make you laugh. Also, I think this is an excellent introduction to historical fiction for readers that would typically avoid this genre.
Ellis Peters’ Delightful characters and writing style made me her huge fan up to date. She is an incredible writer, and I’m glad to have discovered her booklist. My first series to read was Brother Cadfael after reading so much about it in the reviews. It turns out to be the highest-ranked fiction detective series I’ve ever read. The Felse investigations offered plenty, including the deep themes, great settings, and amazing characters. Even though it involves a sad and uneasy story, Ellie has beautifully written it using calm words. I Like how Peters incorporates twists in her novels, adding suspense to the stories.
My husband got me started on Brother Cadfael. I searched for all the books for him and now I’m reading the first one. I love the detail in the books. Detail in everything from the clothing to the food to the landscape as well as the building and plants Cadfael grows. Super.
