I love an author who likes to be controversial and there is no one better at this than Mark Dawson.
In the John Milton series that I have read and reread several times over he challenges the notion that crime does not pay.
Set in 1940s London, it showcases the brutality of the Blitz followed by the slow recovery during the austerity years. These novels are about the women and men who gravitated to the underworld to follow the promise of an easy way to get out of bad times.
I could not put these novels down as they have just what I love to read about. From a serial killer stalking Soho during the Blitz, the cops trying to arrest him to the history of a mafia family from the 1920s to the 1950s, what’s not to love.
Mark Dawson’s books are incredibly short. Usually, I would complain. Short books irritate me, especially when they have the same price tag as a long, 800-page novel. They don’t feel complete.
But Dawson gets a pass because his stories are the perfect length. In fact, now that I’m thinking about it, I have encountered several crime fiction and fantasy novels that would have benefited greatly from a severe trimming.
Dawson’s books do not overstay their welcome. I discovered the author when Amazon recommended ‘In Cold Blood.’ The story sounded like a retelling of Kill Bill. And even after reading it, I still feel like Dawson took a lot of inspiration from Tarantino’s movie. But I was entertained.
