Do you know what I just realized? I don’t read sports fiction. The movies are fun, but the literary genre doesn’t interest me. And yet, I keep buying Mariana Zapata’s novels.
I blame her couples. I thought I hated slow burns. But then I realized that I specifically despise poorly executed slow burns. I can tolerate stories where the characters fall for one another instantly, but I want them to develop a connection gradually.
And that is what Zapata gives me. Even though her books are fast-paced, she gives the couples room to breathe. By the time her characters attain their happily ever after, it feels earned.
