In an era where authors are going out of their way to subvert reader expectations, I like the fact that Linda Howard’s books have a formula. That doesn’t make them predictable. However, the author recognizes that she writes romance novels, and she is not afraid to lean into the tropes of the genre.
These days, I encounter so many authors that are trying so hard to avoid familiar romance tropes that their novels barely count as romance. There’s a reason why we read books in this genre. I don’t know why writers are so hesitant to give us what we came for.
The idea that you have to reinvent the genre to get ahead is false. Just look at Linda Howard. Her novels have plenty of suspense. But she doesn’t lose sight of the demands of the romance genre.
