Lev Grossman: TV/Movies Based on Books

The Magicians was developed into a television series of the same name for the SyFy network. The book was originally optioned in 2011 and was orderd for a pilot by SyFy with John McNamara and Sera Gamble as executive producers.

The show does feature characters and storylines from the books, but they are presented in a different order and the story is changed. The first two seasons are the closest to the books, but after that it gets a bit more original and even goes somewhat beyond the books. The Magicians TV series was well received for critics and aired for five seasons on SyFy.

The character of Janet in the books become Margo on the television show, portrayed by Summer Bishil. Her character and Hale Appleman as Eliot Waugh were considered the real breakouts of the series.
