The Help was adapted into a 2011 film. It was a very fast turnaround as the book was only released in 2009 and the rights weren't secured until 2010 when DreamWorks acquired the rights. The film was written and directed by Tate Taylor. It starred Emma Stone as Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, Viola Davis as Aibileen Clark, Octavia Spencer as Minerva "Minny" Jackson, Jessica Chastain as Celia Rae Foote, Allison Janney as Charlotte Phelan, and Bryce Dallas Howard as Hillary "Hilly" Walters Holbrook. The film was shot in the town of Greenwood, Mississippi and they were able to make it look more like the Jackson, Mississippi of the 1960s. The author was extremely happy that the book was set in Mississippi as she said that she'd have been heartbroken if it were set anywhere else. The film was a box office success grossing over $200 million worldwide and was received strongly by critics. However, the book and film have been criticized for historical accuracy and racial insensitivity. Many of the actors have since expressed regrets over appearing in the film. The Help received numerous accolades with the biggest one being Octavia Spencer winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film. The film received three other nominations, but no other wins.
