My first Karen Robards novel was ‘Guilty.’ I have a friend who loves the book. He thinks it failed to win me over because it was one of the author’s later works, released more than two decades after Robards entered the publishing business.
I don’t know if you need to read an author’s earlier works to appreciate the novels they have published down the line. As far as I’m concerned, ‘Guilty’ is simply a weaker book.
Fortunately, I am far too stubborn to give up on an author after just one novel. The most surprising aspect of Robards’ stories is the way she approaches her heroines. I say ‘surprising’ because the female protagonist in ‘Guilty’ makes so many stupid decisions. However, the heroines in every other Robards novel I have read since then are competent and relatable. Maybe she wrote ‘Guilty’ on a bad day.
Karen Robards never seizes to surprise her readers with her creativity and the skill of weaving entirely different stories. Throughout her books, she keeps me flipping pages to end. In the forbidden love novel, she takes us into Ireland’s luxurious landscape featuring a young beauty and her guardian held between passion and love. The Ultimatum has lots of suspense, a very talented heroine, romance, and intrigue blended with a kick-ass tale that will grab your attention right from the first page. The blend of paranormal and serial killers in The Last Victim novel was so incredible and thrilling. Generally, Charlie is my favorite character, and I could get enough of him.
