I was late to the ‘Inspector McLean’ party. The name sounds like it leaped right out of the Golden Age of crime fiction. But the books are a relatively recent addition to the mystery genre.
Tony McLean is such a sad character. Normally, I avoid stories like this. There’s a limit to the amount of tragedy I can take. And McLean’s life is always going from bad to worse.
But you know what? For once, I don’t really care because these novels are endlessly entertaining. The stories have an incredible amount of depth, complexity, and subtlety. You cannot help but root for Mclean because he doesn’t stop persevering despite all the hits he takes.
