Kurt Wallander is the quintessential hardboiled detective. I had no idea that Sweden had hardboiled detectives until I read Henning Mankell’s Kurt Wallander series.

I was well aware of Mankell’s passion for the political and social causes he champions, which is why I did not expect the author to create such a dark, brooding protagonist.

Wallander is not a happy man. Even in his most joyous moments, I find it difficult to ignore the weight of everything that has happened to him. I appreciate the effort Mankell injects into exploring the social issues that concern him. And yet, he doesn’t sacrifice the entertainment value of his books to get his message across.
