Books like Borkmann’s Point and Mind’s Eye seem so fresh and new that it always shocks me when I realize that Nesser published them in the early 1990s. Then again, the translations came out later on. So maybe the translation has something to do with my appreciation of Nesser’s work.

I don’t like the hard-boiled subgenre of crime fiction because I’ve had my fill of disgruntled, depressed detectives with miserable personal lives. But I decided years ago that I would make an exception for Inspector Van Veeteren because the character is not quite as exaggerated as his peers in the genre.

Nesser doesn’t beat his readers over the head with the misery of his protagonist. His goal is to deliver a well-crafted plot, and he tends to succeed.

All my regards go to this booklist for unveiling Håkan Nesser, who is one of my new best crime authors. Reading about Van Veeteren in action scenes has always given me a refreshing feeling.
Naseer’s novels have superb and complicated characterizations and dialogue, more so in the Van Veeteran series. Nordic Noirs have always been on the priority list, so it’s hard for me not to love the mysteries and crime stories in the genre.
I love how Neseer uses omnipresent and omniscient narrative structure with alternating perspectives among the characters, which brings the dramatic effect to the story in general.
