As a scholar of African American politics, religion, and life, Eddie S. Glaude Jr. explores how the past impacts the present. He has studied the voices of Malcolm X, W.E.B. Du Bois, and James Baldwin, among others, to explain how resistance, hope, faith, and pain coexist.

Eddie S. Glaude Jr. has also been instrumental in shaping debate beyond scholarly circles. He has been a political columnist and commentator on the likes of Meet the Press and Morning Joe, where he combines activist urgency and scholarly rigor to analyze history and current events.

As a leader, Glaude has been at the forefront of guiding major religious and academic organizations and has strengthened institutions studying African American life. He has also served on boards that have shaped higher education and its future.

He published his debut work, Exodus!, in 2000, showing how Black leaders in the 19th century used the Biblical story of the Exodus to guide moral and peaceful action.

Eddie explains the importance of the Exodus story of African Americans facing injustice and slavery. It offered courage, hope, and the idea that they could one day get their freedom. He provides a comparison of how white and Black Americans understood the Exodus narrative in very unique ways.

He also examines the debates at the National Negro Convention, including a critical decision to ban rebellion. All in all, it is a work that shows how faith shaped early ideas about nationhood, politics, and Black identity.

In Democracy in Black, Eddie S. Glaude Jr. makes the argument that America remains racist.
He believes that African Americans are dealing with a deep crisis despite the election of Obama. He gives examples of the voting limits, police violence, and economic harm resulting from the Great Recession to show that true equality has not been achieved.

Glaude believes there is a value gap where white people are treated as being more valuable than others. He combines sharp critique, personal reflection, and history to call for the rebuilding of democracy, even as he challenges civil rights ideas as a remedy for achieving real justice.

In 2020, Eddie S. Glaude Jr. published Begin Again, an exploration of the life of James Baldwin and ideas for addressing the challenges of race in the United States.

Drawing on Baldwin's interviews, biography, memoir, and history, he explains how the country is still affected by racism. He also connects the happenings of the current era to the civil rights era and shows how Black people have been demanding justice, while the US has been pushing back.

He also asks his readers to confront denial, remember painful truths, and take responsibility for building a more shared, just, and honest American future.
