Everyone reads police procedurals for different reasons. Some people love the detailed exploration of the processes the police use to find murderers. Others want a glimpse into the minds of the detectives that chase criminals. You also have those who wonder how police officers balance their personal and private lives.
I don’t have a preference. I want to read well-rounded stories with three-dimensional characters, which is precisely what Dervla McTiernan delivers with the DS Reilly books.
My first Cormac Reilly novel was The Scholar. Even though it was the second book in the series, I was thoroughly entertained. The characters were so fully realized that I understood who they were without reading the first book in the series. This was enough to make me a Dervla McTiernan fan.
I really enjoyed all the books in the Cormac Reilly series and I hope to see another book along the same vein from McTiernan soon! I enjoyed the standalones but I think the Cormac Reilly books were her best work!
