David Gemmell changed everything for me. There I was, overwhelmed with dreary grimdark fantasy, wondering whether I would ever find an author that could deliver the gritty but optimistic realism I wanted to see in the genre.

And then Gemmell came along and answered my prayers with ‘Legend.’ The book was everything I wanted. The stakes were high, and the world was harsh, but the story was uplifting. Every so often, when my spirits are low, I will bolster my mood by chanting ‘Druss The Legend!’ at the top of my lungs until my neighbors complain.

That sounds like a joke, but it isn’t. Gemmell wrote several novels before he passed, but I will always remember him for Legend.
