Darcy Coates wasn’t my cup of tea, not at the start. I don’t remember the first novel I read. But I know I laughed, which wasn’t the proper reaction because the book was horror. It did not work for me, and I was ready to conclude that Darcy couldn’t write horror despite her resume.
Craven changed my mind. It wasn’t the scariest novel I had ever read. But I loved the tense atmosphere Darcy created. Since then, every story of hers that I’ve read has been better than the last.
She doesn’t care a much about gore as you would expect. Instead, she emphasizes the unease her characters experience, and that sensation eventually jumps to the reader.
