Dan Ewald (Daniel A. Ewald) was born on May 2nd, 1921. Dan passed away July 11th, 2018 at 97 years old. Dan Ewald was born in Detroit, MI, USA. Ewald attended Wayne State University where he received a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and a Master's degree in English.
Dan Ewald is a sports writer who has worked for more than 18 years with the Major League Baseball team, the
Detroit Tigers. As director of public relations, he was responsible for all team communications with fans, reporters, and other industry stakeholders.
He got a job as the primary beat writer for the Tigers when Watson Spoelstra left The News after the end of the 1972 season. Ewald would then move to the Grand Rapids Press in 1976 as sports editor. But he would then move to the Tigers, where he was appointed head of public relations and media.
After nearly two decades with the
Detroit Tigers, he left to work for Sparky Anderson, the manager of the Tigers, as an administrative and media relations aide. The two would develop a personal and professional relationship that lasted for years.
In his role, Dan Ewald was responsible for booking speaking and commercial engagements for Sparky, in addition to being involved in his charity projects, such as
CATCH, the Metro Detroit children's hospital initiative, which has achieved significant success.
Given that he worked closely with the professional baseball team from their long summer season to spring training, he learned a lot about the game. As such, he has written books reflecting on his experiences working with professional coaches and athletes.
In his debut work,
Bless You Boys, Dan Ewald follows the
Detroit Tigers across their historic 1984 season.
He follows the Tigers right from when they started training in the spring and through the long season. You get to see the daily life at the clubhouse, the pressure of staying ahead, and the excitement of early wins. Co-author Sparky shares his perspective on leadership, strategy, and the players.
It is a story that builds towards one of the season's most incredible runs, showing how steady effort, confidence, and teamwork shaped one of the team's most memorable years.
In 1998, Dan Ewald teamed up with Sparky Anderson to publish They Call Me SparkyDetroit Tigers.
He tells the story of Sparky’s life in baseball, where he managed several teams, including the
Detroit Tigers and the
Cincinnati Reds. He reflects on the tough games, great players, and the pressure of the run-in.
Sparky also explains the lessons he learned during his time in baseball and his managerial style, providing personal insights from inside the clubhouse and the dugout.
In 2010, Dan Ewald teamed up with Tom Brady and Jon Falk to publish the book
If These Walls Could Talk.
The authors share behind-the-scenes stories from life inside Michigan Stadium, colloquially known as “the Big House”. They recall unforgettable moments, the famous players, and decades of games.
You also get descriptions of the effort the players and coaches put in away from the field, the big rivalries, and locker room traditions.
Through such memories, the work shows how school pride, preparation, and teamwork helped shape the culture and history of Michigan football.
