Sparky Anderson (George Lee Anderson) was born on February 22nd, 1934. Sparky passed away November 4th, 2010 at 76 years old. Sparky Anderson was born in Bridgewater, South Dakota, USA.
Sparky Anderson is primarily known as one of the best managers in
Major League Baseball, where he managed the
Detroit Tigers and the
Cincinnati Reds. During his time as a manager, he led his teams to three championships in the mid-70s and mid-80s.
Anderson spent half a dozen years as a player in the minor leagues before he was called up by the
Philadelphia Phillies in 1959. But he was soon cut from the team and unwilling to return to the minor leagues, he decided to retire and become a manager in the minor leagues.
By 1970, Anderson was back in the major leagues as he managed the
Cincinnati Reds. In his first season in charge, he led the team to winning the National League. Sparky led the team to win several pennants in the National League in addition to two championships during the mid-1970s
He would lead the team to two championships in 1975 and 1976 in addition to winning five National League pennants.
In 1979, Sparky Anderson was named manager of the
Detroit Tigers in the American League, a position that he held for 17 seasons until his retirement. He would go on to win the
World Series with the team and made history by winning it in both the American and National Leagues.
In 1984, Sparky Anderson published the work
Bless You Boys. This is a chronicle of the game-by-game and day-by-day march to the
World Series championship which he won in 1984. Sparky provides details on the pressure the team had to endure during that time, which was made worse by the loss of his father who died in May of that year.
Anderson published
Sparky the novel as a chronicle of his years as a manager particularly the trials and triumphs with the
Detroit Tigers. At some point, he was so stressed that he had to check into the hospital. Anderson also offers insights into the many players he coached many of whom would become hall of famers.
Sparky Anderson teamed up with Dan Ewald to publish
They Call Me Sparky in 1998. This is more of a philosophical work in which Sparky emphasizes the importance of treating others well and conducting oneself with honor and integrity. For the most part, this is a work about good citizenship and personal responsibility.
