Blitz Bazawule is recognized as a musician, visual artist, and filmmaker who directed the musical film adaptation
The Color Purple and
The Burial of Kojo. He is also the author of the bestselling novel
The Scent of Burnt Flowers.
Right from when he was a child living in Accra the Ghanaian capital, he loved the arts. He particularly loved drawing but it was music, especially Afrobeat, Motown, and Ghanaian highlife that he gravitated toward.
Still, he has said that it was
It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, the 1988 album by
Public Enemy that had the biggest impact on him.
Finding inspiration from
Public Enemy, Blitz released several mixtapes when he moved to the United States. In New York, he began pursuing a career in music, hoping to make it big in hip-hop.
Over the years, he has released four music albums in which he raps in West African Pidgin, Twi, and English.
In his works, Bazawule is known for featuring the likes of Nneka, Angelique Kidjo, and Seun Kuti who are some of the biggest names in African music. He also featured Chuck D of
Public Enemy on
Native Sun the 2011 album.
Ultimately, he made use of the money he got from the performance of his music to fund
The Burial of Kojo, his first feature film.
While he did not have funding from traditional sources nor formal training, his debut film came to the attention of Ava DuVernay the Hollywood great. Ava’s company plucked up the film distribution rights and soon enough it became the first film produced by a Ghanaian to stream on
Netflix.
The Burial of Kojo became a critically acclaimed work that even Beyonce was so impressed that she invited Bazawule to help direct
Black is King, her cinematic effort. Released in 2020, it was the visual companion to the
Lion King Reboot in 2019.
After working in music and film, Bazawule decided to try his hand at literature. In 2022, he published his debut work
The Scent of Burnt Flowers. The work follows a couple seeking asylum in Ghana after they experienced a lot of persecution in the United States during the 1960s.
The work is now being made into a six-episode series on TV with Blitz writing, producing, and directing.
