Andy Rooney

Andy Rooney (Andrew Aitken Rooney) was born on January 14th, 1919. Andy passed away November 4th, 2011 at 92 years old. Andy Rooney was born in Albany, New York, USA. Rooney attended Colgate University.

Andy Rooney was an American essayist and journalist best known for his bad-tempered, negative yet witty commentaries on 60 Minutes. A native of Albany, New York, he fought in World War II in 1941 before working for The Stars and Stripes as a correspondent covering aerial conflicts in Europe. His early writing career was shaped by his experiences in the war, leading to books such as Conqueror’s Peace and Air Gunner.

Following the end of World War II, Andy Rooney worked as a freelance writer for a time before finding a job as a writer with CBS, where he contributed to the Arthur Godfrey television and radio programs. Throughout the 1950s and 60s, he was a contributor to news programs and comedies, even as he collaborated on television essays with Harry Reasoner.

In 1970, Rooney quit CBS when the network refused to air one of his essays criticizing modern warfare. He would later return with a series of specials, and in 1978, he debuted A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney. His segments, filled with sharp observations and dry humor, became so popular that he won several Emmys.

Until his retirement in 2011, Rooney was a staple on 60 Minutes. His work was marked by a deep and sharp understanding of human nature, making him one of the most beloved commentators in American culture.

In 2002, Andy Rooney published Common Nonsense, a collection of more than 150 essays on various subjects such as war and religion. With his signature keen observation and wit, he provides poignant and humorous perspectives on modern life. While some of his essays have lighthearted takes, many tackle more serious issues, showcasing his depth as a commentator and writer.

Andy Rooney: 60 Years of Wisdom and Wit compiles the author's most compelling essays published over the course of his long career, from his time with The Stars and Stripes to his work at CBS and his more than three-decade career on 60 Minutes. The essays range from lighthearted, mundane topics to more profound ones, delivered with his signature candor and wit.

One of Rooney's most popular works, A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney, published in 1981, is a collection of more than fifty essays that bring together his most memorable segments. This anthology offers reflective pauses on some of the most hard-hitting news stories and showcases his distinctive voice, taking readers on a nostalgic journey enriched with entertaining and thought-provoking insights.
