Mercedes Lackey is not what I expected. The way her name is always thrown around, I imagined a young, modern YA star that writes novels in the vein of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. For one thing, she’s older, born in 1950.
Additionally, while her novels lean towards the YA genre, they do not have the same obsession with romance seen in the biggest YA books of the last two decades.
When I read Arrow of the Queen a month ago, I was ready to accuse her of reaping off Harry Potter. But this novel came out years before J.K. Rowling entered the publishing arena. After years of ignoring her, I am starting to think that Lackey is the perfect author for me.
Ive read many of these books and rarely found any i difnt care for but my keepers are the valdemar series.
I have read her books for almost since she started writing, and she is definitely one of my autopick authors. I have recently started re-reading the Valdemar series, starting with the newer Foundation books. I just reached Arrows of the Queen and found a couple of things that I have also found in reading some other authors. I totally can agree that writing books out of sequence can lead to some disconnects when there are several years between them, and I found that to be true between the newer books and Arrows of the Queen. None of them were massive and I doubt would have been noticed (even by me, and I have almost a photographic memory of books that I really like!) except for my current re-read status. Doesn’t change the fact that the books are really enjoyable though!
