The Dragonriders series of novels by Anne McCaffrey did offer a thrilling ride fantastic worlds with interesting conflicts, issues, characters and good storytelling.
When I first read the Dragonriders novels more than ten years ago, I found them a refreshing change from the typical sorceress and sword tales that were being published at the time.
I did find that later novels in the Dragonriders series had less of the freshness of the initial novels as they were more formulaic.
Dragonflight was the first novel I ever read after more than a decade. I had been a huge reader of the novels when I was a school child but had stopped reading them when I grew older.
With a new found thirst for some fantasy stories, I read this novel and I have to say it is just as good as it was all those years ago.
This list has blown my mind. I was that one reader in my family that spent my childhood calling Anne McCaffery the dragon rider lady. I started saying it at five, and I never stopped.
I had no idea that she had written other novels in other series. In fact, I’m just realizing now that I never finished the Pern novels, which doesn’t make sense because those books were my life.
I blame my school librarian. When I got to book 10, she told me the series was over. I don’t know what she was thinking. Maybe they thought I would demand the rest of the series, and they couldn’t be bothered to procure the other novels.
I don’t get it. And honestly, I don’t really care right now. I cannot wait to dive back into this world and to figure out where the story went.
I compulsively and obsessively read the whole series a few years ago. I enjoyed the escapism but find I have to agree with Edgar A. “later novels in the Dragonriders series had less of the freshness of the initial novels as they were more formulaic”.
Anne had a very conservative or prudish style of writing and her handling of romance and sex was very restrained, I found this somewhat irritating and perhaps nauseating at times. (Think along the lines of Jean M. Auel’s approach used in the Earth’s Children’s series).
A suggested reading order I employed:
The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall – The Survey: P.E.R.N.
Dragonsdawn
The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall – The Dolphins’ Bell
The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall – The Ford of Red Hanrahan
The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall – The Second Weyr
Dragonsblood (Windblossom) – Chapters 2,4,6,7,8,10,12,15,17,19,21,23
The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall – Rescue Run
Red Star Rising
A Gift of Dragons – Ever the Twain
Dragon’s Kin
Dragon’s Fire
Dragon Harper
Dragonsblood (Lorana) – Chapters 1,3,5,9,11,13,14,16,18,20,22,24

Skydragons
Loretta: Dragonlady of Pern
Legends II – Beyond Between
Nerilka’s Story
The Masterharper of Pern
