Many people treat Yrsa’s books as a gateway to Icelandic fiction. But to me, the author is a tour guide, taking me by the hand in each book and introducing me to Iceland’s various sights and sounds.

I don’t think I had ever given Iceland a single thought before discovering Yrsa. Even now, I don’t think I can find the country on a map unless Iceland is clearly labeled and marked.

That being said, I know more about Iceland today than I did a year ago. The mysteries are a great bonus because they are masterfully crafted. I have never read a translated novel before. I am tempted to learn Yrsa’s native tongue just to see how the original texts compare to the translations.
