As an Australian from very temperate part of Australia, I found William Kent Kruger’s writing in the Cork O’Connor series to be refreshing. He describes the setting with the snow, cold, skis and snowmobiles with such vivid detail that you feel as if you were in the stories.
Of all his stories I loved Thunder Bay which I found to be an absolute gem of a story. It is in this work that we get to know more about the reclusive detective and how he came to live in Aurora. He also gets to showcase his exceptional skills.
Krueger is just as good in Heaven’s Keep as he keeps getting better in his plotting. The novel provided the full range of emotions from total devastation to disbelief as a man has a disagreement with his wife one morning only for her charter flight to disappear in a snow storm leaving him inconsolable.
William Kent Krueger is like chocolate. He will ruin your appetite for other books. Literary fiction is hit and miss for me. In my opinion, the entire genre is boring because it follows ordinary people who spend hundreds of pages doing ordinary things.
I still stand by that assessment. However, I am starting to think that I was simply waiting for the right author to reveal the wonders of literary fiction to my unsophisticated brain.
Krueger’s writing is incredible. I urge you to read ‘Ordinary Grace.’ It will wreak havoc on your emotions. Every time I finish one of Krueger’s books, every novel I attempt to read in the following weeks feels so inferior. The man is a master.
I have read the Cork O’Connor series and cannot wait for more books. I hear great comments about “Ordinary Grace” and have that on my TBR list. He is definitely on my list of favorite authors.
Just read ‘The River we Remember’. I found it reminiscent of WKK’s Cork O’Connor books, leading me to ask “Is this really a stand alone novel, or the beginning of a new series?”.
I really enjoy the Cork O Connor series. However, I have especially enjoyed the standalone novels Ordinary Grace and The River We Remember. Both of these are outstanding!
This Tender Land was also outstanding. You might try that one if you loved Ordinary Grace/.
The River We Remember just jumps off the pages at you. While taking place in a time we love to remember fondly it often stuns us with the forgotten racist undertones of America in post war 50’s and 60’s. The characters are unforgettable and tragic. As soon as I finished the book, I returned it to the library and promptly bough my own copy.
I wasn’t expecting The River We Remember. I thought it was different from Krueger writing But it was excellent.
The River We Remember – standalone, 1st book I’ve read by this author based on a recommendation from a friend’s friend. Original comment was this was the best book she had EVER read. It was good and I’m game to read more by this author but it doesn’t fall in the category of “best book ever” for me.
Read Ordinary Grace. It is excellent too!
Just finished. – excellent read.
Just finished The River We Remember. Excellent book! He is a great writer. I highly recommend this book. His Cork O’Connor mysteries are very good also.
Ordinary Grace – 2nd book I have read by this author based on the recommendation of a friend’s friend. Excellent read and will be reading more by this author.
