Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg (Caryn Elaine Johnson) was born on November 13th, 1955 and is currently 69 years old. Whoopi Goldberg was born in New York, New York, USA.

Whoopi Goldberg is an author, actor, comedian, and TV personality.

In 2001, she received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. She is one of the few people to received an EGOT, an Emmy, a Grammy, an Academy Award, and Tony.

She started her career on stage, with a one woman show called Spook Show, which she transferred to Broadway under the name of Whoopi Goldberg, which ran from 1984 until 1985. She won a Grammy for the recorded version of this show.

Her first onscreen performance was in Citizen: I’m Not Losing My Mind, I’m Giving It Away in 1982, and it is an avant garde ensemble feature from William Farley.

Appearing in Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple was her big movie breakthrough, and she won her first Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture—Drama. Steven saw her performing her Broadway performance in The Belly Room at The Comedy Store. Roger Ebert said that it was one of the best debut performances in movie history.

When she won her Oscar for Ghost in 1990, she became the first black woman to win a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in almost 50 years, and just the second black woman to ever win an acting Oscar.

Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me is a unique and new memoir of her family and their influence on her early life.

If it hadn’t been for Emma Johnson, then Caryn never would have become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her kids the wisdom and loving care that they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them both to remain true to themselves. Whoopi lost her mom in 2010 and then Clyde (her elder brother) just 5 years later, she felt totally alone; as the only ones that truly knew her were gone.

Her mom raised her kids to thrive, not just survive. In a heartfelt and intimate memoir, she shares numerous of the very personal tales of their lives together for the very first time. Growing up in New York City’s projects, there were trips to the Ice Capades, Coney Island, and museums, and each and every Christmas was a magical experience. To this day, she doesn’t know quite how her mom was able to provide them with such an enriching childhood, despite all of the struggles that they faced, and it was not until Whoopi was well into adulthood that she discovered how traumatic some of these struggles were.
