Walter Tevis: TV/Movies Based on Books

The Man Who Fell to Earth was a film and a TV movie/pilot before being remade again as a television series in 2022. The new series aired on Showtime and was created by Jenny Lumet and Alex Kurtzman. It starred Chiwetel Ejiofor playing Faraday, the alien who fell to Earth. The show received positive reviews, but was ultimately not renewed for a second season.

The Queen's Gambit was adapted into a minseries by Netflix in 2020. The series was created by Scott Frank and Alan Scott. It starred Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth Harmon and Bill Camp as Mr. William Shaibel. After the debut of the show it was announced that it was the most watched show on Netflix in October of 2020 and was Netflix's biggest scripted limited series to date.

The series did very well during awards season as well. It won the Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. The Queen's Gambit also won Golden Globe Awards for Best Limited Series or Television Film and Anya Taylor-Joy won for Best Actress – Limited Series or Television Film.

The Hustler was the first book of Tevis' to be adapted into a film. The 1959 novel became a 1961 film starring Paul Newman as Fast Eddie and Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats. The movie was a hit at both the box office and with the critics. It received multiple Academy Award nominations, including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay, but came up short in each category. It did earn wins for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.

The film has had an enduring legacy and was selected for preservation by the United States National Film Registry and the Academy Film Archive.

The character of Fast Eddie made his return in the 1984 novel The Color of Money. The film was directed by Martin Scorsese and saw the return of Paul Newman as Fast Eddie. The film also starred Tom Cruise as Vincent Lauria. Like its predecessor, the film received many Academy Award nominations. This time, however, Paul Newman was able to win the Academy Award for Best Actor.

This film had multiple changes from the novel. The original had featured Minnesota Fats character returning as well. Tevis had actually written a screenplay for the film, but they ultimately went another way with it.

It received good to mixed reviews at the time of its release, but has since become a major cult classic. It has been reconsidered by many and is now considered one of the best science fiction movies of its era.

The novel was adapted into a made-for-TV movie in 1987 in the United States. There were some changes to the story as the alien was named John Dory instead of Thomas Jerome Newton. The movie was meant as a pilot for a television series, but it was not picked up.
