It won the Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. The Queen's Gambit also won Golden Globe Awards for Best Limited Series or Television Film and Anya Taylor-Joy won for Best Actress – Limited Series or Television Film.

The Hustler was the first book of Tevis' to be adapted into a film. The 1959 novel became a 1961 film starring Paul Newman as Fast Eddie and Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats. The movie was a hit at both the box office and with the critics. It received multiple Academy Award nominations, including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay, but came up short in each category. It did earn wins for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.

The film has had an enduring legacy and was selected for preservation by the United States National Film Registry and the Academy Film Archive.

The character of Fast Eddie made his return in the 1984 novel The Color of Money. The film was directed by Martin Scorsese and saw the return of Paul Newman as Fast Eddie. The novel was adapted into a made-for-TV movie in 1987 in the United States. There were some changes to the story as the alien was named John Dory instead of Thomas Jerome Newton. The movie was meant as a pilot for a television series, but it was not picked up.
