In Tony’s Navajo Mysteries, which star Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, it’s fun reading about the four corners area and learning more about the Navajos, both their culture and their history. It also features an intriguing mystery, some compelling characters, and there is plenty of good reading material.
A Thief of Time is a gem in the series, with descriptions of the thousand foot cliffs along the San Juan River during the nighttime and a starry sky, with a Navajo mystery create an unforgettable portrait of America’s Southwest.
Another novel, Listening Woman is a captivating read that many fans of the series believe to be one of the very best.
The world of fiction lost a good one when Tony Hillerman passed away in 2008. He was a combat veteran of World War II that always added a bit of real grit to his novels. It’s hard to pick a favorite from this book list because Tony was very consistent throughout his career.
He must’ve had good genes because his daughter Anne has continued the Leaphorn & Chee series, and they continue to be awesome.
This list saddens me. I have enjoyed the years it has taken me to acquaint myself with Tony Hillerman. From what I saw in his bibliography, the man was clearly a fascinating character, which isn’t surprising when you consider all the things he saw and did.
The mere fact that he was married to his wife for six decades blows my mind. Hillerman and his wife were together for longer than some people were alive. And now, I keep browsing this list in search of some new book that escaped me.
But alas, I’ve read them all, and unfortunately, Hillerman is dead. We can’t expect any new books from him. Fortunately, I have a shelf of Leaphorn and Chee books in my home library. I might as well re-read the series from the beginning.
