Tony Hillerman had been dead for several years when I discovered the Leaphorn novels. Initially, I assumed that the Leaphorn series had died with him. But then I realized that several Leaphorn novels had been published after his death.
I was hesitant to read Anne Hillerman’s take on her father’s work. But many of the reviews I found surprised me. Whenever a storyteller dies, people do not treat their replacement well.
They cannot distance themselves from the original storyteller long enough to judge the new person on their own merit. But I was surprised to encounter so many reviews praising Anne for her contribution to Tony’s work.
So far, Spider Woman’s Daughter is all I’ve read. It did not disappoint. Yes, it is dark and violent, which is surprising. But Anne is a deft writer. Rather than replicating her father’s style, she has chosen to place her own unique stamp on the series.
