Tim Gunn
Tim Gunn is an American author and TV personality. He was an on-air mentor to designers on the TV program
Project Runway and his popularity on the show resulted in two spin-off shows
Under the Gunn and
Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style.
In his book
Tim Gunn's Fashion Bible gives a short account of every item in your closet, from gloves to skirts and to everything in between. Between the compelling paragraphs on the evolution of dresses, there are pieces of advice and fashion tips, but that’s not the book's main agenda.
Gunn does a fantastic job of defending the importance of fashion. He argues that “having a limited range of outfits is just like having a limited range of vocabulary.” He further explains that we need to have different clothes for different occasions.
One of the principles he emphasizes throughout the book is that, in the modern world, people dress all the time casually, whether they are going to the grocery store or the airport, and that’s not a good thing. He also explains that Americans' emphasis on wearing what makes us comfortable, even if it makes those around us uncomfortable, is one of our less attractive national attributes.
The book is spiced up with photos throughout to help illustrate the text. Gunn also challenges the modern modelling industry for switching from women models in their 30s with natural curvy bodies in the 1950s to modern-day hyper-skinny teenagers and even pre-teens outfitted for adult women. He also criticizes most of today’s designers for refusing to create clothes meant for anyone over size 12, even when the average size in the US is 14P.
Gunn’s fashion history is interesting, his illustrations are fun, and the fashion advice is quite helpful. But the best part of the book is the author’s random reminiscences. While he’s honest about some trends in America’s fashion industry, he challenges us to think more carefully about our clothing choices and to respect the innovative designers who have significantly shaped our wardrobes.
