Morris Dees
Morris Dees (Morris Seligman Dees Jr.) was born on December 16th, 1936 and is currently 89 years old. Morris Dees was born in Shorter, AL, USA. Dees attended the University of Alabama where he received a Bachelor of Laws degree.
Morris Dees is a distinguished American activist and civil rights lawyer who is the co-founder of the
Southern Poverty Law Center.
He was raised in Alabama by staunch Christian parents who instilled in him Christian values. He initially found success in direct mail publishing before he decided to change course. Finding inspiration in
The Story of My Life by Clarence Darrow, he devoted his life to civil rights litigation and social justice.
Under the leadership of Morris Dees, the
SPLC would become nationally recognized as he challenged white supremacist organizations and hate groups using civil lawsuits. One of his biggest cases was when he got a million-dollar judgment, which bankrupted the
United Klans of America.
Dees was instrumental in the integration of the
Montgomery YMCA and the
Alabama State Troopers. He also played a critical role in the procedures for redistricting the legislature in Alabama. His work helped improve the political representation for Black voters.
For much of his career, he fought for the rights of mentally ill individuals, prisoners, and immigrants, even as he challenged the inhuman conditions and discriminatory laws in the criminal justice system in Alabama. In 1992, he launched a national education initiative known as
Teaching Tolerance, which provided free anti-bias resources for teachers.
While he achieved a lot, he faced much criticism for the aggressive fundraising and legal tactics of the
SPLC. In 2019, he was let go from the
SPLC, which cited concerns with leadership ethics and internal culture.
In 2003, Morris Dees published his memoir titled
A Lawyer’s Journey.
In the work, he traces his transformation from being a successful businessman in Alabama to one of the most prominent advocates for civil rights and a founding member of the
Southern Poverty Law Center.
Through storytelling, he tells of how he fought against the Ku Klux among other hate groups, won landmark civil rights cases, and made professional and personal sacrifices. Dees also reflects on his fight for racial equality, his moral awakening, and his commitment to using legal means to effect social change.
