Someone I know described Ted Bell as the poor man’s Ian Flemming because the Alex Hawke books go to great lengths to capture the same spirit as James Bond. I don’t think that statement is the insult my friend intended it to be.

I can’t speak to the intentions of Mr. Bell. But I read James Bond because those novels are silly and fun. There’s never a dull moment. In that same vein, Alex Hawke is never boring. His stories are far more serious than James Bond. But Bell never takes the character so seriously that he strips these novels of their humor. Without the humor, I don’t know if I would enjoy Bell’s work quite as enthusiastically as I do today.
