Someone should make a movie about Sven Hassel. I feel like he had already lived thrice as long as I have by the time he was 30. Every time I read the author’s various biographies online, I feel like I’m only scratching the surface.
There are so many fascinating contradictions in the claims he made about his life. I love his approach to war stories. It shows the destructive impact war can have on the human mind.
Novels like ‘Legion of the Damned’ will get you thinking. You cannot help but ponder all the atrocities the author survived and how they informed his stories. But he still lived a long and fulfilling life, which is encouraging.
