Stuart McBride is one very creative guy and reading his novels I could not help but marvel at the many ways he knew how to write a story.

I loved the Logan McRae series of novels best and particularly Cold Granite the first. McRae is just coming off sick leave after he was injured working a complicated case. I love that he gets right back to it chasing down suspects of multiple murders and abductions.

We have a fast moving plot that could involve a serial killer or not. What I loved best about the novel was that every time I believed I was getting close to figuring things out, MacBride would hit me with another twist.

Stuart MacBride’s books are atmospheric. Technically speaking, you can say that about many crime fiction authors. But MacBride is special. Yes, he blew me away with ‘Cold Granite’ because of the way he described the unforgiving winter in Aberdeen. I was shaking in my boots alongside DS Logan.

‘Cold Granite’ was the first Stuart MacBride novel I read, and it did not disappoint. But as I slowly made my way through his bibliography, I noticed that even the warmest of MacBride’s settings felt occasionally cold.

It took me a while to realize that I was simply internalizing the melancholy of the characters in a way I hadn’t done before. That is what I mean when I say that MacBride’s books are atmospheric. When things are bad, you feel the negativity pouring off the page.

Maybe this is unfair, I have only read one of MacBride’s books ‘the 45% Hangover’ I felt it was a short story one could write in their lunch break. I assume it was supposed to be a lighthearted take on the Scottish referendum a one joke story with nowhere to go. I will try another book sometime and hope I will not be disappointed.
