I was a little worried when I started reading the Joe Dillard books. Joe wasn’t necessarily miserable. But he had a lot on his plate, including a sick mother and a flawed justice system that kept knocking him down.
Some mystery novels have similar weaknesses. The protagonist, a detective, is so miserable that we spend more time exploring his personal problems than we do on the mysteries.
I expected Scott Pratt to fall into the same pit. But the author promised us legal thrillers, and that is what he delivered. Joe is just like any other person. He’s flawed and overwhelmed. But that doesn’t stop him from doing his job, which is why he’s so relatable.
