‘Eunice Parchman killed the Coverdale family because she could not read or write.’ Every time I read that line, it gives me chills. I have read more Ruth Rendell books over the years than I can remember. But I always return to A Judgment in Stone.

I typically dismiss people who describe fiction as high art. Fiction is entertainment. I think people exaggerate its value. But A Judgment in Stone has the best opening line in all of fiction, which is why I can’t call the books Ruth wrote anything other than high art.

She has a way of using mundane events and moments to build suspense and to tell thought-provoking stories. I don’t understand why we read Dickison in school when Ruth Rendell’s books are far more profound.
