Ruby Hamad
Ruby Hamad was born in Lebanon.
Ruby Hamad is a journalist, academic, and author best known for her article,
How White Women Use Strategic Tears to Silence Women of Colour , published in The Guardian.
She first came into the limelight when she published the aforementioned article that became a global flashpoint for discussions of racism and white feminism.
The article would later inspire her debut non-fiction work,
White Tears/Brown Scars, which received widespread critical acclaim in her home country of Australia and around the world.
Ruby Hamad’s writing has since appeared in publications such as The New Arab, Prospect Magazine, Gen Medium, The Guardian, and The New York Times. Her essays, literary reviews, and analyses have also been featured in prominent Australian publications such as Eureka St, The Saturday Paper, Crikey, and Meanjin.
Ruby also spent half a decade working as a columnist for Daily Life, the flagship feminist portal in the Fairfax Media network.
She currently splits her time between New York and Sydney.
In 2020, Ruby Hamad published the work
White Tears Brown Scars to explore how mainstream feminism often ignores or harms Black women while emphasizing the experiences of White women.
According to Ruby Hamad, this is not a new pattern, as it has been happening for a long time, as white women have often faced gender inequality, even as they benefited from racial systems.
The author uses examples from everyday life, politics, and media to show how black women are often blamed, silenced, and left out of feminist conversations.
She examines how sexism and racism can overlap, even as they create different challenges for different groups of women. Ruby Hamad believes that feminism needs to become more inclusive and recognize privilege, power, and race together rather than isolating gender as the core issue.
