Robert J. Donovan was born August 21, 1912. He was an American correspondent, presidential historian, and author.
He went to Lafayette High School in Buffalo, New York, where he was captain of the Hocke Herald Tribune after the war and he also served as a foreign correspondent and Washington, D.C. bureau chief.
During the latter period Robert was president of the White House Correspondents’ Association. From the Tribune, he moved on to the
Los Angeles Times as Washington bureau chief and for a short time was associate editor in Los Angeles.
He started writing books about the Washington political scene while he was still a reporter and continued after he’d retired. He also served one year as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and one year as a visiting professor at Princeton University.
Robert liked joking that he was the only Princeton professor never to have attended a single day of college in his whole life.
In 1984, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Harry S. Truman’s birth, Robert addressed a Joint Session of Congress as Harry’s personal biographer. At this time, he was the only active journalist to ever have had that distinction.
He died from complications of a stroke August 8, 2003, shortly before his 81st birthday.

New York Herald Tribune, has evidently been given access to minutes of numerous Cabinet and other top-level meetings and has additionally had fruitful interviews with a number of officials.
The result, which appears to be responsibly handled and written, is surprisingly intimate portrait of the inner workings of the Eisenhower Administration, including some highly illuminating details on the formulation of domestic and foreign policies.
