Robert Dugoni has lately become one of my favorite authors in the mystery, thriller and suspense genres.
What I love about him is that he usually juxtaposes the fresh and formulaic to make for some thrilling stories. However, It was not until I read My Sister’s Grave which delighted and surprised me in equal measure that I really got into reading his works more deeply.
My favorite Robert Dugoni character is Tracy Crosswhite whose sister Sarah went missing two decades back. Tracy feels like she never had closure even though the police had arrested and prosecuted Edmund House and sent him to jail.
The Tracy Crosswhite series are slow simmering and smartly written mysteries that I enjoyed a lot. If you are looking for development and character driven stories then you cannot go wrong with this series.
Most of my friends started singing Dugoni’s praises back when the Tracy Crosswhite series started. In fact, I only read those books because my friends kept gushing about them.
Did I like them? Yes, I did. Dugoni writes compelling mysteries, and Tracy is an engaging protagonist. I enjoyed rooting for her. But her story did not blow me away. I would only buy those novels when I had nothing better to read.
‘The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell’ was the turning point. As far as I’m concerned, it is the best book Dugoni has ever written, and it wasn’t even crime fiction.
Sam Hell was such a tragic character. Now, I am making an effort to hunt down Dugoni’s standalone novels, a process that would have irritated me if this list hadn’t simplified things. I’m still waiting for ‘The World Played Chess’ to arrive. I doubt it will disappoint me.
I am a “new” reader of the Sloane series and I love it! His character is so honest! I realize that’s a weird characteristic to point out but it is such a big part of his personality. His books (so far I’ve read only 2) are gripping and hold your attention completely. Kudos!
