Richard first came to prominence as the multi-instrumentalist that partnered Jimmy Somerville in the 80s band the Communards. They racked up 3 UK top-10 hits, including Don’t Leave Me This Way, a #1 record and bestselling single of 1986. They appeared in the Lesbian and Gay Youth Video Project film called Framed Youth: The Revenge of the Teenage Perverts.
Richard learned how to play keyboards, saxophone, and clarinet, and moved to London in 1980, where he played in theatre. He initially joined Bronski Beat in 1983 on sax.
He narrated
JerUSAlem and began his writing career by contributing to the
Times Literary Supplement and the
Catholic Herald. He took up religion during his late 20s, after pop success and the deaths of his friends as a result of HIV.
He studied for a BA in theology at King’s College London from 1991 to 1994. During his time at university, he became a Roman Catholic and stayed one for about the following 10 years before he returned to Anglicanism in 2001.
Richard got selected for training for priesthood in 2003 in the Church of England and started his training at the College of Resurrection, Mirfield, West Yorkshire, and was ordained in 2005.
He frequently appears on TV and radio and in newspapers. From March of 2011 until 2023, he co-hosted BBC Radio 4’s
Saturday Live programme.

Richard is chancellor of the University of Northampton, a patron of social housing project Greatwell Homes in Wellingborough, and a former honorary chaplain to the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers.
