Mick does more than merely write flawlessly suspenseful spy thrillers, and is a craftist of the highest order. He digs deep into the world of modern politics, where it is often the bad actors that come out on top with thrilling wit and an unnervingly knowing eye.
The novels feature smart and sophisticated takes on some real world issues, with some sly humor which does a great job of cutting through the darkness.
Much of his sense of humor comes from his keen eye for the way that bureaucracies, whether clandestine or corporate, malfunction and function. The world that is Slough House is much closer to The Office than it is 007.
‘Slow Horses’ is my favorite novel of the year so far. Interestingly enough, I only bought it because I heard that Apple was turning the book into a TV show. I know that most people are obsessed with Disney+ and Netflix, but I think Apple will leave them in the dust.
Their shows are so riveting. I haven’t seen anything on Netflix in the last two years that can rival ‘Foundation.’ So naturally, I wanted to know what made Mick Herron’s story so exciting that Apple would adapt it.
The book did not disappoint. It did that thing I love where a bunch of misfits have to band together to prove to their critics that their mistakes don’t define them. ‘Slow Horses’ deserves an adaptation.
Love the Slough House series. The characters make me laugh, cry, and sigh. Just glad Lamb is not my boss.
Love the Slough House series. The characters are funny, sad, heartbreaking, and infuriating. So glad I never had a boss like Lamb!!
I was given a copy of ‘Slow Horses’ when it was first published. I did not get on very well with it and never actually finished the book, unusual for me. Recently I have finished watching the Apple TV series on the Slow Horses. And have now read most of the early books and have gotten as far as ‘Bad Actors’ I think it is unusual to go from a TV series to the Books
