Nobody is able to create that ripe-for-murder-and-mayhem and spooky atmosphere the way he does and The Girl Who Died is extra creepy and spooky. It’s also pretty captivating and an enjoyable novel. Ragnar excels in creating a location which acts like a central character that this disturbing and unsettling story revolves. There’s this feeling of isolation and loneliness because of where this takes place.
All of his characters are pretty complex, especially Una. This is beautifully plotted, and a noir of an untrustworthy community that harbors deceptions, ghosts, secrets, lies, and crime where the sense of dread only ever grows stronger.
As the weather gets colder, Icelandic mysteries just start to hit a little differently. You can really feel the cold come through the pages of each book on the Dark Iceland list of books. The atmosphere is the thing that makes this series stick out to me.
Ragnar describes towns that sound nightmarish because of the freezing conditions. But then I think about them and realize how appealing it would be to hide behind a wall of mountains, sealing yourself off from civilization and spending each day wrapped in heavy blankets before a roaring fire, reading to your heart’s content.
It sounds terrible from certain perspectives, especially for someone like me who despises the cold. But I can also see the beauty. Ragnar is slowly becoming my favorite Icelandic author. Admittedly, that doesn’t mean anything because he’s the only Icelandic author I know.
Nonetheless, I can always trust him to keep me entertained with grim tales of murder and mayhem in small Icelandic towns.
The Dark Iceland books are simply terrific. He imparts the true feel of Iceland in his stories.
Great reads. He gives you the feeling of almost being there to witness the story as he is telling it.
