Pete Dexter is probably best known for their Standalone Novels. There are currently 7 novels available. The first standalone was released in 1983 with the novel God's Pocket. Pete Dexter has also written one book in the Non-Fiction Books series called, Paper Trails.
Pete received an honorary Doctor of Letters and Literature from the University of South Dakota in 2010 after receiving his undergraduate degree in 1969.
Dexter's books have won multiple awards, Paris Trout won the National Book Awards, Best Fiction, in 1988. The Paperboy won the PEN Center USA Award, Literary Award, in 1996. Train won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, Best Fiction, in 2003.
John Slattery directed the 2014 film adaptation of Pete's book God's Pocket. Philip Seymour Hoffman, John Turturro, Christina Hendricks, and Richard Jenkins starred in the movie. After the film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival to mixed reviews, IFC Films purchased it for domestic distribution. Another one of Pete's books, Deadwood, influenced the 1995 film Wild Bill. It starred Jeff Bridges, Ellen Barkin, John Hurt, and Diane Lane and was produced by Richard D. Zanuck & Lili Fini Zanuck. Matthew McConaughey, Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman, David Oyelowo, John Cusack, and Macy Gray were among the many well-known actors who appeared in the 2012 crime drama film based on Pete's book The Paperboy. Pete had a number of his books made into T.V. series: Paris Trout is a 1991 made-for-television drama film directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal, starring Dennis Hopper, Barbara Hershey, and Ed Harris.
