Margaret Atwood: TV/Movies Based on Books
The Handmaid's Tale is the most famous adaptation of Atwood's work. The show aired on Hulu and was an instant success. It received 13 Emmy nominations in its first season and won eight of them. It was the first Hulu show and the first show from an streaming service to win an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. The series also won multiple Golden Globe Awards. The series stars Elisabeth Moss as Offred. She won the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series award at the 2017 Primetime Emmy Awards for her role.
Atwood's 2011 children's book, Wandering Wenda and Widow Wallop's Wunderground Washery, was made into a television show for CBC in 2017. The show was called The Wide World of Wandering Wenda and featured animated characters.
The third Atwood novel to be adapted for television was Alias Grace. The show aired on CBC Television and Netflix in 2017. It starred Sarah Gadon as Grace Marks and Edward Holcroft as Dr. Simon Jordan. It was a miniseries and aired for six episodes.
Margaret also saw her short stories turned into an anthology series called The Atwood Stories in 2003. The series took six of Atwood's short stories and dramatized them. Actors appearing on the show include David Sutcliffe, Emily Hampshire, Roberta Maxwell, and Christian Campbell.
