Mother Teresa
Mother Teresa (Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu) was born on August 26th, 1910. Mother Teresa passed away September 5th, 1997 at 87 years old. Mother Teresa was born in Uskup, Kosovo Vilayet (present day Skopje), Ottoman Empire (present day North Macedonia).
Mother Teresa was an Indian Albanian Catholic nun, Catholic Saint, and founder of the
Missionaries of Charity.
She was just 12 when she felt that she was called by God to spread the love of Christ as a missionary. At 18, she left her hometown of Skopje and joined the Irish community of nuns known as the
Sisters of Loreto who ran missions in India. After training in Dublin, she moved to India where she became a nun.
From 1931 to 1948, Mother Teresa was a teacher at a Calcutta high school. However, the poverty and suffering she saw outside the walls of the convent deeply moved her and she got permission from her superiors to leave and go work with the poorest in the Calcutta slums.
With hardly any money, she started a school for slum-dwelling children dependent on Divine Providence. It was not long before she started receiving financial support and voluntary helpers. This gave her the encouragement and motivation to expand the scope of her activities with the poor.
In 1950, Mother Teresa launched
The Missionaries of Charity, an order intended to promote care and love for persons nobody wanted to look after. In 1965, Pope Paul VI decreed that the order would become an
International Religious Family.
The order has expanded across the world into Eastern European Countries, the former Soviet Union, and poor countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. In addition to helping the poor, it also undertakes relief work in the wake of natural catastrophes such as famine, epidemics, and floods.
Mother Teresa’s work has been acclaimed and received recognition throughout the world and she has won many distinctions and awards over the years.
Loving Jesus is a work that was published in 1991. It is a collection of the interviews, comments, sayings, addresses, and speeches of Mother Teresa. The work for the most part focuses on the mission of serving the poorest of the poor with the love of Christ. Mother Teresa also talks of issues such as abortion, unwanted and abandoned children, the scourge of AIDS, and leprosy in the third world.
In 1994, Mother Teresa published the work
Suffering Into Joy alongside Kathleen Egan. It communicates the paradox of the joy of unselfish love and showcases the selfless compassion that Mother Teresa was known for. The latter teaches that people who are called need to joyfully and willingly accept suffering just like Jesus did.
A year later, Mother Teresa published
A Simple Path in which she chronicled the founding of her order the
Missionaries of Charity. She also tells of their practice and purpose and how through prayer, surrender, and faith, they work to give dignity to the dying and improve the lives of countless people.
