Melvin Dixon was an American literature professor, writer, poet, and translator. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University and both his master’s and PhD from Brown University. He published two poetry collections:
Change of Territory (1983) and
Love’s Instruments (1995), the latter released after his death.
Dixon also wrote two novels:
Trouble the Water (1989), which received an award for outstanding minority fiction, and
Vanishing Rooms (1991). Much of his writing focused on the challenges of being a gay Black man in America, drawing inspiration from the work of James Baldwin.
Vanishing Rooms is a deeply emotional novel that follows three central characters. Jesse, a young Black dancer, is mourning the loss of his boyfriend, Metro. Ruella, a fellow Black dancer, is drawn to Jesse romantically. Lonny, a white teenager trying to survive on the streets, feels pressure to prove himself to his violent, homophobic peers.
The novel centers on Metro’s murder and how it affects the lives of all three characters. The event is described in stark, understated terms - like a news item - which makes Jesse’s grief all the more poignant. His love for Metro is portrayed with raw intensity, often compared to his passion for dance.
But
Vanishing Rooms is more than just a story of loss. It explores themes of racial identity, sexuality, marginalization, and the complexities of queer relationships. Jesse, for instance, visits a large, surreal sex club run by an older Black man who tries to seduce him - a scene that leaves Jesse with conflicted feelings and adds to the book’s dreamlike, uneasy tone.
The novel also grapples with moral ambiguity. Ruella’s brother, an incarcerated man, arranges an unconventional form of revenge for Metro’s death. Meanwhile, Ruella’s friendship with Jesse is revealed to be rooted more in personal need than genuine affection, adding another layer of emotional complexity.
Dixon approaches these tangled relationships with care and depth. The ending is consistent with the characters’ inner lives - unresolved in some ways, but emotionally resonant.
Vanishing Rooms is a powerful, haunting novel that examines grief, desire, injustice, and survival with compassion and clarity.
