When Massimo was a 19-year-old student, he heard the cries of a woman. Following them, he found 25-year-old Margherita Magello bleeding and dying. She had been stabbed nearly sixty times. Rather than contacting the police, Massimo fled the scene, and ended up getting arrested and charged with the murder. When he was first tried, he was acquitted due to lack of evidence. But then, he received an 18-year sentence, which was confirmed by the Supreme Court of Cassation. He went on the run, becoming a fugitive in France and then Mexico. He was captured and returned to Italy. After a popular movement for his innocence and years of legal posturing, Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro granted him a pardon.
Carlotto's book, The Goodbye Kiss was nominated for the Edgar Award, Best Paperback Original, in 2007.
